Basics

The title is the first thing that people are going to be confused about. While the Michelin brand is well-known for its tires, how could it be related to restaurants? It is correct that the French tire manufacturer Michelin is the third-largest tire manufacturer in the world, but the same company is providing road maps, Red and Green travel guides also. The Red Guide is constantly updating its list of the best restaurants according to the quality of food and dining experience and rating those restaurants with stars. So, the same brothers Ándre Jules and Édouard Michelins have founded the Red Guide in 1900, just ten years after the tire company has been opened.

In general, there are three Michelin Stars and they all are given to praise a restaurant. One star means that a restaurant is very good, provides quality food and drinks, has high-standard service but something is still missing. That could be a lack of menu, not enough choices of beverages, or even some elements of interior design. Two stars say that a restaurant is unique, provides exceptional food, and has something very authentic that might be found only in this location. Three stars define perfection. It means everything is irresistible here from food to drinks, from chef to waiters, from a chair to your napkin. Also, it is important to know that a star can be given to a restaurant only, not to a chef.

Before being awarded a Michelin Star, a restaurant is visited by the Michelin inspectors who are always anonymous. It means, the management team of a restaurant has no chance to prepare for the visit or even indicate a person as an inspector, as a result, all restaurants that are seeking for a star must do their best all the time. The job position of the Michelin inspector is an honor but very mystical because those people cannot reveal their job to anyone even family members, cannot speak with journalists, or cannot provide any articles. When such an inspector visits a restaurant, he or she is going to evaluate every little detail. Later, the board of inspectors is taking the final decision together.
